The Edinburgh Business School at Heriot-Watt University is also one of the world's largest providers of postgraduate business education, with over 11,000 students in 166 countries undertaking courses and degrees through online, blended and face-to-face means.

We offer a range of undergraduate programmes in Economics as well as range of specialist Masters degrees that represent key strengths in the team. Economics at Heriot-Watt was ranked third in the UK in the Guardian University Guide 2018, and third in the UK and first in Scotland for Overall Satisfaction in the 2019 National Student Survey, reflecting an excellent record of student experience delivery and high graduate employability.

In terms of research, its strengths lie in applied activity in areas related to macroeconomics, finance, labour and energy economics. Full details of staff research interests are available at: https://researchportal.hw.ac.uk/en/organisations/accountancy-economics-finance/persons/.

The School is seeking to appoint an assistant professor to contribute to teaching, scholarship and applied research in the Economics subject area.

The post holder is required to:

Design and undertake teaching in a variety of settings, from small group tutorials to large lectures, to support the delivery of Heriot-Watt University’s pedagogic aims. As course coordinator/tutor, the post holder will coordinate with others (such as support staff and academic colleagues) to ensure student needs and expectations are met:

Extend, transform and apply knowledge acquired from scholarship to teaching, research and appropriate external activities. This includes a commitment to supporting student study by identifying learning needs of students, defining appropriate learning objectives and ensuring production of content, methods of delivery and learning materials to meet these needs. The post holder will also be involved in planning, authoring and designing (and revising) new course material as part of the School’s teaching programmes, and making proposals as to how best this might be achieved. They will also take on responsibility for the design and delivery of their own modules and assessment methods. They will be expected to challenge thinking, foster debate and develop the ability of students to engage in critical discourse and rational thinking.

You will have a good honours degree and/or Masters in Economics or related subjects, along with a PhD in hand or in process of submission in Economics or cognate areas together with demonstrable record of successful performance in teaching, research and scholarship.

Any queries about the post can be directed to Interim Head of Department, Prof. David Finkelstein (d.finkelstein@hw.ac.uk)
