About Us

NERC is a partner organisation within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). UKRI brings together nine organisations to create one single, independent entity with a strong voice, and a vision to ensure the UK maintains its world-leading position in research and innovation.

NERC is the UK's leading funder of environmental science. Our scientists study and monitor the physical, chemical and biological processes on which our planet and life itself depends – from pole to pole, from the deep Earth and oceans to the atmosphere and space. The science we fund has impact across all sectors. It provides a platform for future UK prosperity by contributing to a safe, healthy, productive nation. Many programmes involve collaborations with national and international partners to tackle large-scale environmental science challenges, including those faced by developing countries.

NERC strategic ambition

Our Earth system and its environmental processes do not exist in isolation from each other, nor do they stop at national boundaries. Environmental challenges such as climate change, ocean health and atmospheric pollution affect us all and cannot be addressed by one nation alone. Hence environmental research must be done in partnership and operate worldwide.

The creation of UKRI, together with growing UK investment in science for development, opens new opportunities to create multi-agency and multi-disciplinary programmes to solve global environmental challenges. Through NERC and UKRI funds we will lead, coordinate and invest in international research and innovation partnerships – to mobilise UK expertise, to tackle global challenges, to support international development, to respond rapidly to environmental emergencies, and to bring economic, societal and environmental benefit to the UK.

About the role

You will bring the vision, leadership and diplomacy to provide strategic direction for NERC’s international portfolio, develop global partnership, and generate co-funded research and innovation programmes that deliver economic, social and environmental solutions.

You will lead the NERC Head Office team to facilitate collaboration with international partners and make it easier for the UK research community to work with partners overseas and access infrastructure, data and unique locations.

You will build and manage effective strategic bi- and multi-lateral partnerships with key international organisations such as counterpart agencies overseas, philanthropic foundations, UN organisations and the European Commission. Through these partnerships, NERC will influence and contribute to global agendas, provide leadership in international forums, develop collaborative funding mechanisms, leverage additional funding in areas of mutual interest, and enable collaboration.

About you

You will have experience and a strong track-record of leading the development of successful partnership and collaboration with international partners. You will have astute political acumen and demonstrable experience of developing collaborative working relationships, excellent interpersonal skills. Please see the full list of responsibilities and essential and desirable criteria on the iRecruitment site.

UK Research and Innovation recognises and values employees as individuals and aim to provide a pay and rewards package that motivates staff to perform to the best of their ability. The reward package includes a flexible working scheme, a Career Average Revalued Earnings pension scheme, 30 days annual leave allowance and a number of other benefits.
