ABN AMRO’s Group Economics is responsible for macro and micro analysis and provides independent views that form input for decision makers, in and outside the bank. Group Economics conducts research with a high relevance for our stakeholders. Working in this department entails more than conducting research and monitoring trends. Our economists frequently publish and present their research on conferences, for clients and in the media.

The team consists of macroeconomists and strategists in the field of fixed income securities, currencies and commodities. Our economists contribute to the formulation of the strategy of the bank, various parts of risk policy, balance sheet management, stress testing and the investment policy that the bank advises and implements for clients. Many of our activities are directly focused on the clients of our bank, like institutional investors and consumer clients. The emphasis always lies on the translation of topical research into the practice of the user. The team resides within the Strategy & Sustainability department of ABN AMRO, which directly reports to the CEO.

Your job

As the Chief Economist, you are responsible for the intellectual leadership relating to all macroeconomic research within ABN AMRO. You carry out part of the research yourself and communicate the results of your and regularly your colleagues’ research widely. The Chief Economist provides thought leadership inside and outside the bank and leads three teams (Emerging Markets & Commodities, Financial Markets and the Netherlands) of highly skilled economists.

Together with the heads of the three teams and head of the Strategy & Sustainability, you will accommodate the strategic agenda of ABN AMRO and initiate, identify and prioritise research and projects accordingly.

The role of Chief Economist is a challenging and highly visible role. Therefore we are looking for a highly talented and enthusiastic colleague matching the following description:

Knowledge and experience

  • Excellent academic track record (Master degree);
  • Senior level experience in economic research and an extensive publications record;
  • Deep understanding of the economical and political dimensions of the financial industry. Understanding of key policy and business issues related to our company and sector;
  • Demonstrated experience of leading a team of experts and/or economists, including ability to organise and manage human resources to achieve strategic goals;
  • Excellent written and communication skills;Excellent stakeholder management skills, experience of advising at board level and managing a diverse range of stakeholders;
  • Fluent English language skills, both written and spoken;
  • Ability to speak and understand Dutch, or willingness and ability to learn within the first few months.
