The University of Surrey Economics PhD is typically seen as the second stage of a four-year programme. The first step is the MRes Economics programme lasting one year, and the PhD is the second stage, lasting three years (with the possibility of extensions).

The MRes Economics is designed to target those with an outstanding background in Economics, often already holding an MSc in the subject, who wish to engage in doctoral research in Economics. The focus of the modules is entirely research-oriented.

Combining the MRes with the PhD will help you to compete in the academic job market. Your first year of PhD will be spent attending advanced modules in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics, while working on your research. The final two years of your PhD will be completely dedicated to your research, leading to a PhD dissertation.

The School of Economics at the University of Surrey consists of an international community of world-leading researchers. All academics within the School of Economics are research active and some are advisers to world-renowned organisations. Our research is at the forefront of the field and informs our teaching, ensuring that what you learn is topical, relevant and has practical implications.

We offer five taught masters programmes in addition to our 1+3 year PhD. To discover more about our programmes and how to apply please visit the website.
