As part of the BT Economics team you will be part of a highly motivated team working on high profile issues cutting across all of BTs lines of business and Openreach within the parameters of the BT and Openreach Commitments. This could be assistance and advice on competition or regulatory economics issues to our legal or regulatory teams, contributing advice to a business case ahead of a go/no-go decision (working with the BT Corporate Strategy or Finance teams), or advising on the best commercial strategy to pursue in the face of changes in regulation (often triggering changes in competitive dynamics in turn).

In a nutshell, you will contribute economic advice and lead projects (or parts thereof) with economic issues at their core contributing by deploying competition or regulatory economics skills, as well as financial and economic modelling skills.

You will have overall accountability to one of our Senior Economists for delivering high quality economic analysis and thought leadership for these matters but may often work for customers elsewhere in the organisation, be that within Regulatory Affairs, Corporate Strategy or one of our business units.

You'll have the following responsibilities

  • Provide clear, concise and timely economic advice and briefings to BT senior management and business colleagues including based on your own research and modelling; or based on modelling by other teams where you contribute the underlying rigorous economic logic.
  • Work with others to identify key commercial and regulatory opportunities and risks from an economic perspective applying best practice and innovative thinking. As part of that you will bring together disciplines in an agile manner to ensure that economics is combined with other inputs wherever needed.
  • Lead projects or parts of projects where they have economics at their core, bringing a multi-disciplinary team to bear in an agile way, and deliver in time and to an excellent standard.
  • Represent BT in discussions with key stakeholders, including Ofcom and DCMS, and contribute to the preparation of consultation responses on key economic and financial topics.
  • Role model behaviours reflective of our values and help us work in an agile manner and with the best prospect of shaping the debate.
  • Develop your reputation and connections externally in order to help promote BT's views in relation to wider communications sector stakeholders

You'll have the following skills & experience

  • A passion for economics and the ability to articulate complex concepts in a clear and concise as well as the ability to tailor messages to target audiences
  • Past experience in applying economics to commercial and policy issues
  • The skills required for economic analysis including familiarity with quantitative and qualitative techniques which are commonly used in a regulatory, competition law and commercial context
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to articulate complex concepts in a clear and concise as well as the ability to tailor messages to target audiences
  • Experience in managing and delivering economics project on time and to a high standard
  • Started to develop your own professional network external to BT
  • An Msc in Economic plus a minimum of 2 years post Msc work
