Ofgem is committed to making a positive difference for energy consumers through effective regulation of the market and close working with suppliers to ensure sustainable energy for consumers and businesses in the UK.

A career with Ofgem offers a rare professional opportunity. As energy is an essential universal service, our work touches on virtually every household and business in Great Britain. And our Economists make a valuable contribution across all aspects of our work, ensuring that influential decisions around regulation, consumer protection and the wider energy marketplace are well-informed by sound evidence and analysis.

The way in which energy is generated, stored and delivered is changing. New technology and the drive towards a low-carbon energy sector are shaping a new energy system that is low carbon, more decentralised, smart and flexible. And Ofgem is at the forefront of this change.

As an Economist at Ofgem, you will be part of our Economics Community, working alongside senior economists to ensure that our policy recommendations are informed by thorough and insightful economic analysis. You'll have the chance to apply a range of economic concepts and model-based arguments to inform policy decisions, and address issues and problems. You can expect to be working across a wide range of high profile projects and will contribute to Ofgem research on energy market issues. You can be assured of a commitment to your ongoing professional development and we will encourage you to keep up to date with developments in economic theory and practice.

We expect you'll hold a degree in Economics, or be able to demonstrate equivalent expertise through your career experience. Excellent analytical skills (both quantitative and qualitative) are vital, and you should have practical experience of applying economic concepts to decision-making, including policy appraisal and evaluation - using varying techniques and evaluating outcomes. You should be confident in your ability to present findings and recommendations in person and in written policy papers. It's important that you can distil complex subject matter into key messages for different audiences, and that you have previous experience of working with diverse groups of stakeholders.

Right now we're looking to recruit a number of Economists. We intend to build a talent pool of applicants from this process that we can use to fill current vacancies and subsequent positions over the next 3 months.

Ofgem can offer you a comprehensive and competitive benefits package, which includes:

  • Up to 30 days' annual leave
  • Excellent training and development opportunities
  • The opportunity to join the Civil Service pension arrangements, which include a valuable range of benefits
  • Flexible working hours and family friendly policies
  • Subsidised gym and restaurant (London only)
  • Interest free season ticket loan.

Ofgem is an equal opportunities employer. Protecting consumers and powering the future of the energy debate.

We welcome applications from everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, faith or disability. Please let us know if you require any recruitment documentation in other formats or if you require reasonable adjustments to be made during the recruitment process.

To apply, please go to: https://ofgem.oftjobs.co.uk

Closing date: 3rd February 2019.

*Upon application, a decision on whether you have been successfully shortlisted can be expected by 18th February. Interviews will commence week beginning 25th February (London) and week beginning 4th March (Glasgow).
