Our Economics PhD is seen as the second stage of a four-year programme. The first step is the MRes Economics programme lasting one year, and the PhD follows on from this, lasting three years (with the added possibility of extensions).

Our PhD programme produces graduates who are sought-after by leading economics departments, business schools, and research institutions around the world.
We are pleased to be able to offer generous studentships for the duration of the MRes/PhD course for those with strong research potential.

The School of Economics has a leading reputation in research and teaching. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, our School was ranked 6th in the UK for research intensity, 10th in research output and 12th overall. We are also ranked in the top 10 for business and economics in the United Kingdom by the Times Higher Education World University

This project is open to UK and international students starting in July 2022.

Entry requirements

Candidates will need to meet the entry requirements for the Economics PhD programme. Full details are listed on the Economics PhD programme page.
English language requirements: IELTS Academic 6.5 or above (or equivalent) with 6.0 in each individual category, or equivalent. More about our English language requirements.

How to apply

Applications should be submitted via the Economics PhD programme page on the "Apply" tab.
There is no need to submit a research proposal. Please state clearly the studentship that you would like to apply for


UK or international fees covered. A yearly stipend (for 2022-23 entry, up to £18,522). A yearly research allowance. In addition, there are funds available for periods of research abroad, and other research expenses. Funding is for 4 years. Funded by the School of Economics.
