Department for International Trade

Westminster, London or Darlington

Application Deadline
£34,425 - £44,033

About the role

To help guide the Department for International Trade's (DIT) strategic thinking, the Global Futures Group – a ‘futures think-tank’ – sits at the heart of DIT within the Ministerial Strategy Directorate. Your role will be on the Future Trends Team, which is responsible for creating the long-term quantitative analysis that will underpin DIT’s strategic decisions.

Working within the wider ‘Global Futures Group’ you will develop DIT’s analysis of the long-term economic, societal, technological, and environmental trends that will shape the UK’s trade and investment prospects over the next 5-20 years and identify what those trends mean for DIT. An example of our work can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/...

We are looking for an analyst with experience working as a professional economist that will complement others in the Future Trends Team. As such, you are bound to find great job satisfaction in our team, enhanced by a competitive benefits package, a collaborative working environment, extensive networking opportunities and the scope to develop your personal and professional skills.

Quantitative Analysis – You will use your economic knowledge and experience of quantitative analysis (particularly macroeconomics) to project how the global economy and global trade are likely to evolve over the coming decades, and what risks and scenarios could lead to different outcomes. You will use your analysis to shed light on the complex policy issues and strategic choices facing DIT in the decades ahead.

Insight – You will have a flare for discovering new data sources that can be synthesised with established macroeconomic, trade and investment datasets to deliver new insights. You will also be comfortable analysing large datasets to draw out clear conclusions.

Collaborative working – A key part of your role will be working with other members of Ministerial Strategy Directorate and beyond to identify gaps in DIT’s longer-term thinking and how to help fill them with. This will include working on a range of trade and investment projects focused on specific geographies (e.g. Asia), sectors (e.g. energy), or issues (e.g. climate change).

Delivery – You will be experienced at converting your analytical insights into engaging reports and presentations. You will be an articulate writer and have an eye for producing engaging graphics and charts. You will also be skilled at drawing out ‘killer facts’ that will grab the attention of your readers.
