Barbour ABI is the chosen provider of the New Orders in the Construction Industry dataset to ONS detailing how much new work has been awarded in construction across the UK and is also the chosen partner of the Infrastructure and Projects Authority in providing the National Infrastructure and Construction Pipeline.

AMA Research is a leading specialist provider of market research and insight to the UK building and construction industry. AMA Research publishes over 150 off-the-shelf market reports, along with forecast bulletins and databases, covering building and construction, environmental and other B2B sectors in the UK. AMA Research’s research and analysis goes beyond the more commonly available range of statistical and company information to provide expert, informed commentary and in-depth market analysis. AMA Research also offers a broad range of bespoke services including commissioned market research projects and consumer and business surveys.

Both Barbour ABI and AMA Research are owned by Informa, a leading business intelligence, academic publishing, knowledge and events business, operating in the Knowledge and Information Economy. Informa is listed on the London Stock Exchange and a member of the FTSE 100.

Barbour ABI is based near Chester and AMA Research is based in Cheltenham.

The role

The Lead Economist, Construction (CE) will be responsible for analysing, forecasting and providing insight on the UK construction industry and will be the market-facing figurehead for Barbour ABI and AMA Research.

The CE will be the head of economic analysis within Barbour ABI and AMA, including all commissioned research and major client contact, and will be responsible for all sales activity for commissioned research. Other key responsibilities will be the delivery of analysis, presenting to customers and at events, as well as being “the face of Barbour ABI and AMA Research” in the press. Work closely with Data analysts at Barbour ABI, the AMA Commissioned Research Manager and the AMA Head of Research to plan and ensure delivery. Target driven, as all sales roles. Reporting to AMA Brand Director and Barbour ABI Content Director.

The CE will be (or will be expected to become) a leading commentator on the construction industry, developing a deep understanding of the market place and the people within it. The CE will be responsible for heading the further development of market intelligence services, providing forecasts for the industry by sector and region, as well as profiling the industry’s leading clients.

The role will also be responsible for delivering external analytical content of the highest possible quality across all platforms and for maintaining the highest levels of accuracy and integrity for the brands.

Principal duties and responsibilities:

  • Head of economic analysis within Barbour ABI and AMA Research
  • Responsible for all sales activity for commissioned research across AMA Research and Barbour ABI
  • To be responsible for external analytical content
  • To be responsive to news events or to create proactive comment and cultivate national media and further expand the brand profiles
  • Work with marketing teams to ensure maximum relevant exposure for both brands through topical data stories
  • Relationships with other forecasting bodies and data mining partner(s) to create indices for property investment & other markets.
  • To provide content and analysis for the programme of Construction events
  • Defining data requirements and supporting processes and systems to facilitate analysis.
  • Guide New Product Development for Analysis products.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Advanced degree in economics.
  • At least three to five years experience working as an economist
  • Proven track record of winning and delivering commissioned research in Construction, Property or other allied industries.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify key economic, financial, regulatory, and demographic drivers of economic trends in sectors/on regional and national levels, and to assess how changes in relevant metrics will impact the industry as a whole.
  • Knowledge of the Building and Construction industry (preferred)
  • Strong track record in leading market analytics (designing and utilizing complex data sets, profiling, statistical analysis…)
  • Experience of market insight in a B2B environment (preferred)
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and decision making skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate analysis and relevant conclusions
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, major providers of economic, financial, and industry data and analysis.
