SOAS University of London
London, United Kingdom
Application Deadline

In the current context of climate emergency, international trade wars, and continued gender disparities inside and outside the labour market, the need for an Economics education that is global, thorough and drawing on competing theories, perspectives and solutions cannot be underestimated. The SOAS Economics department offers a real-world, regional perspective, grounded in concrete knowledge of the economies of Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and combines this with research-led, rigorous teaching that leads to our Masters graduates being some of the most sought-after in the global job-market.

Our approach

Our economics post-graduate programmes provide unique training in both mainstream economics and heterodox theories and methods. They provide students with advanced quantitative and qualitative skills and apply these to a variety of contemporary and global economic issues. Emphasis is placed on interrogating the links between economic theories and the real world, using pluralist and political economy perspectives and the courses draw on the rich regional expertise of SOAS. Students are encouraged to develop a deep understanding of specific countries and issues, based on a concrete analysis of history, institutions, and political economy. Our teaching is research-led and uses a variety of learning and assessment methods, from individual essays to group projects and data-driven assignments, depending on the choice of programme and module.

Our programmes

Our programmes offer a wide range of technical and regional expertise and are designed to provide a strong foundation in the core skills necessary for you to be employed as a professional economist or to undertake PhD research. They reflect our four “Rs”: rigour (covering mainstream and heterodox approaches to theory and policy), research-led (drawing on large successful research projects), regional (focusing on global phenomena but not necessarily from the perspective of the global North) and real-world (covering cutting edge issues such as the climate crisis, gender inequality or governance and corruption).
