BSEF is looking to recruit a full time senior regulatory affairs and advocacy manager to contribute to its global regulatory and public policy engagement related to bromine and bromine-based technologies. The successful candidate will join the BSEF team in Brussels and will take the lead in coordinating BSEF’s global advocacy and regulatory activities working with the Secretary General and BSEF regional teams, member companies and affiliates.

Job Description

  • Work with Secretary General and BSEF member companies in defining and executing strategies and plans to support bromine-based technologies and applications;
  • Manage and review BSEF’s policy and regulatory intelligence tools and structures;
  • Monitor and advise BSEF on emerging regulatory issues in Europe and globally and provide timely updates and intelligence to member companies on relevant aspects of global public policy as well as regulatory developments;
  • Maintain a repository for all studies conducted on behalf of Forum;
  • Monitor and report developments on key fire safety standards;
  • Manage BSEF’s regulatory working group as well as coordinate BSEF teams in key regions/countries;
  • Support company scientists in liaison with European regulatory bodies;
  • Act as the liaison between the REACH Brominated Substances Consortium and the Council;
  • Work with the BSEF Communications Manager in formulating supporting communications for socialising bromine-based technologies as well as ensuring BSEF advocacy is supported by appropriate communications and messaging;
  • Build and maintain networks within member companies to support BSEF’s work and ensure BSEF is aligned with member company interests;
  • Develop and maintain working relations with external stakeholders including EU & global institutions (OECD, IEA, UN), other international and regional organisations, national governments and civil society;
  • Represent BSEF’s interests in EU and international policy and regulatory fora.

BSEF’s current global regulatory and advocacy team encompasses offices in China and Japan along with representative entities and consulting support in Brazil and India. BSEF also works closely with associate associations and sector groups in Europe (Flame Retardants Europe) and in North America (American Chemistry Council/North American Flame-Retardant Alliance). These entities are further supported by a network of subject matter experts which assist BSEF and its member companies across a range of research, advocacy and standards work.

We are looking for

  • A strong academic background in natural sciences, chemistry or engineering (to at least M.Sc or M.Eng);
  • Fluent English (written and oral) is required. Knowledge and capability in other languages (French, German, Spanish) essential;
  • 5-8 years’ experience in regulatory and advocacy with experience working with or for EU or international organisations would be an advantage;
  • Knowledge of major global/regional public policy and regulatory trends in the environmental and sustainable development fields;
  • Ability to manage a varied workload of different issues and tasks/projects within time constrained deadlines;
  • Proven track record of generating and developing new ideas and approaches with respect to public policy and advocacy around issues – seeking opportunities and addressing challenges;
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills are essential;
  • Track record of building and developing networks/coalitions around issues;
  • Strong research and intelligence gathering background enabling collation of information and research for use in issue management and/or strategy development for public policy and advocacy.

The position involves frequent travel for meetings and international conferences/events. A willingness to travel is therefore a pre-requisite.
