About the Blavatnik School of Government

Our vision is of a world better led, a world better served and a world better governed. We are a global school committed to improving the quality of government and public policymaking worldwide, through three routes: teaching current and future leaders; generating research with impact; and engaging with governments and practitioners.

About the Role

We are seeking an innovative, early-career researcher to join the Mind and Behaviour Research Group (MBRG), part of the Centre for the Study of African Economies (CSAE).

Our current research is in three streams: frictions in urban developing country labour markets that prevent young people finding work and interventions that can reduce these frictions; the role of mental health in labour market decisions and how treatments for mental health improve labour market outcomes; and the design of cash transfer and wage subsidy programmes.

Alongside a team of Principal Investigators, the Research Assistant will work across a number of exciting research projects focused on labour, behavioural and development economics, with opportunities to be involved at all stages of the research pipeline. This will include: contributing to research and intervention design, carrying out in-country fieldwork and developing strong skills in data analysis.

About You

The successful candidate will hold (or be near completion of) a Master’s degree in economics or quantitative social science, along with sufficient specialist knowledge in economics. They will have excellent skills in statistics/econometrics and in using Stata.

They will have the ability to carry out independent quantitative research, be willing to take responsibility for delivery of research outputs and have a systematic, thorough and well-organised approach to work.

A demonstrated interest in development economics, excellent oral and written communication skills and high levels of accuracy are also essential for the role.

What we offer

The School is a collaborative, friendly, and dynamic department based in an award-winning building in Oxford. We host regular events and talks with well-known guest speakers – all of which are open to staff.

As an employer, we genuinely care about our employees’ wellbeing and this is reflected in the range of benefits that we offer including:

  • An excellent contributory pension scheme
  • 38 days’ annual leave
  • Family leave schemes and a comprehensive range of childcare services
  • Cycle loan scheme and discounted bus travel and Season Ticket travel loans
  • Membership to a variety of social and sports clubs
  • Opportunities for remote working.

Application Process

You will be required to upload a the details of two referees, a CV and a supporting statement (max. two pages). The supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience, and should also outline your research interests and explain your dissertation/extended essay (topic, contribution, identification, findings).

The closing date for applications is 16:00 (UK time) on Monday 20 March 2023.

We anticipate that the longlisting process will take place in late March – early April 2023, with virtual interviews being held in mid-late April 2023.
