The Competition and Economics Division (CED) is looking to recruit a Senior Associate Economist with a background and interest in applied microeconomic analysis and public policy. The successful candidate would provide economic analysis across a range of projects, including market studies, competition enforcement cases and the wider work of the Division.
As a Senior Associate in the CED, you will help us shape the work of the department, and of the FCA’s mandate to promote effective competition in the interests of consumers.
The key responsibilities will be:
- You will play an integral part to the achievement of the FCA’s operational aim of promoting competition, protecting consumers and maintaining market integrity, collaborating with experts across the organisation and communicating to senior management and non-economists.
- You will work alongside other professionals in a multi-disciplinary environment, scoping and designing frameworks to identify and analyse information on markets, firm conduct and consumer behaviour from a range of sources. You will inform and provide evidence-based recommendations to decision-makers on how competition in consumers’ interests could be strengthened.
- You will be responsible for and will drive on data collection, management and analysis to provide a view on the effectiveness of competition in the markets investigated. For example, your work may include investigating consumer preferences and switching patterns using consumer survey data; econometric analysis of firms’ prices and costs; investigation of cross-subsidisation; and assessment of ‘value for money’ provided by financial products and services using data collected from firms and other sources.
- You will be expected to share technical knowledge across the rest of the division, and will support other parts of the FCA by providing advice and guidance on competition issues, as required.

- Strong academic and professional background in economics, including a qualification in Economics at a Bachelor/Masters level.
- Professional experience of conducting economic analysis for competition, regulatory or policy purposes in an economic consultancy and/or governmental, regulatory or competition agency.
- Professional experience of performing quantitative analysis (e.g. econometric analysis) for competition, regulatory or policy purposes.
- Experience in a professional context of handling complex or large data sets, and performing statistical analysis using software packages (e.g. Stata, R, Python, SQL).
- Demonstrable ability to identify and analyse different sources of information on markets, firm and consumer behaviour to inform analysis.
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Understanding of the UK competition regime and competition powers at the EU and UK level.
The FCA has a statutory aim to promote competition in the interest of consumers. The CED Division runs on this. Our work includes; conducting market studies across the retail and wholesale sectors, implementing remedies as a result, investigating potential breaches of competition law using our concurrent powers, and the application of economics to problems facing the FCA. The division, which is formed by a vibrant mix of UK and international staff from a range of professional backgrounds, works closely with colleagues from across the FCA including Policy, Market Intelligence Data and Analysis (MIDA), Enforcement and Supervision to ensure high quality analysis and effective choices across all aspects of FCA regulation. We are also part of the UK Competition Network and work with Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) on financial services matters.

- The salary range will be approximately 46,000 – 60,000 GBP plus a competitive benefits package and non-contributory pension
