The Competition Economics Team under Google’s Chief Economist Hal Varian works at the frontier of digital competition economics and the nascent economic regulation of the technology sector. Our remit covers all of Google’s products across the globe.

As a Senior Competition Economist at Google, you will work with the company’s Legal and Policy Teams, as well as engineers responsible for the relevant products, helping them refine Google’s position in various cases, analyse its business practices, respond to government agencies’ queries and data requests, and prepare evidence for court filings. You will also liaise with and supervise outside economic advisors. Beyond playing a role in such investigations, you will also be a thought leader, helping Google engage in debates touching on the technology sector from an economic perspective.

The position is advertised for our London and Brussels offices, but alternative European locations can be discussed on a case-by-case basis with successful applicants.

  • Lead the collection and analysis of data in the context of regulatory and litigation proceedings.
  • Work cross-functionally with our Legal, Finance, Policy, and product teams on economic analyses to inform Google’s positions.
  • Perform testing and verification of economic assumptions, including designing and reviewing experiments.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Economics with a focus on industrial organisation and antitrust economics or equivalent practical experience
  • Significant experience in regulatory or litigation proceedings at an economic consulting firm, competition agency, or technology company
  • Experience in econometric modelling and statistical analyses, using software such as Stata and R

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with data manipulation tools such as SQL and Python
  • Knowledge of key issues affecting the sector
  • Solid leadership and communication skills with a willingness to collaborate internally and externally
  • Passion for technology
