We are currently looking for a highly-capable and proven Senior Economist to join our Aerospace Strategy team. This role presents a unique opportunity to shape the future of UK aerospace and air travel. The candidate will have a privileged perspective across the entire industry and beyond, and it is an exceptional opportunity to develop professional networks.

The main responsibilities of the role will include:

1) Leading development of ATI economic insight and capability

Developing and maintaining relevant economic intelligence is crucial to the ATI’s strategy and execution. You will be responsible for leading economic studies pertinent to ATI’s mission and objectives. Past studies have explored aerospace industrial strategy, projected the economic impact of ATI, and identified how and where economic spill overs occur. This role will take a lead in these efforts, including:

  • Working with the Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Strategy to define and scope new avenues of economic research
  • Managing the execution and delivery of studies alongside other duties
  • Leading engagements with external consultants when needed, inviting proposals, managing delivery and assuring overall quality for the ATI
  • Building networks with relevant stakeholders across multiple domains to support work, representing ATI in key industry and government forums on economics
  • Writing compelling reports, publications and blogs, presenting these to internal and external audiences

2) Leading strategic and economic appraisal of R&T projects and the overall programme

ATI leads the development of the ATI R&T programme - a portfolio of projects funded equally between Government and Industry. This role plays an important part in ensuring projects and the overall programme are having maximum impact. You will maintain ATI’s economic evaluation approach for projects seeking funding and support the ATI in developing its portfolio and technology strategy. This includes:

  • Engaging companies and research consortia to support the development of new ATI projects
  • Working with other members of the team and government to appraise projects seeking funding
  • Supporting efforts within the ATI to develop the technology and portfolio strategy

3) Building the overall evidence base for ATI intervention and R&T funding

The ATI plays an important role in maintaining knowledge of the sector, what interventions work and ensuring continuity of support that keeps the UK globally competitive. You will support the Corporate Development Officer in articulating economic messages to government stakeholders. This includes:

  • Leading on ATI’s overall approach to projecting, monitoring and measuring impact
  • Gathering evidence including case studies and aerospace economic statistics
  • Representing the ATI in BEIS-led evaluation, supporting delivery and ensuring relevant information is provided

4) Supporting and managing a variety of business-critical projects

The ATI is a small organisation that covers a complex and diverse range of issues. Often, ATI must respond to events that require its expertise. You will be expected to lead on urgent tasks that either need ATI’s economic perspective or bringing together a range of ATI inputs.

Examples of such tasks include calls for evidence/input to government green papers, advice to government policy teams on industry issues and giving input to government spending reviews.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the organisation that is leading the strategic direction of the UK aerospace sector.

The Candidate

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with energy to proactively shape the role. They will have a passion for understanding the economic dynamics of a global industry like aerospace, how innovation is affected by economic policies and how aerospace relates to the wider economy and global priorities like climate change and security. The ability to apply technical skills and broader strategic thinking to tackle a variety of issues and questions in aerospace, innovation and industrial policy is essential. They will be able to manage ambiguous and changing contexts, able to adapt priorities and work plans to ensure ATI remains a thought-leader.

They will have demonstrated the following characteristics and strengths:

  • Able to quickly understand new contexts and situations, ask relevant questions, engage on topics and challenge ideas constructively

  • Strong analytical and modelling skills (i.e. statistical methods)
  • Familiarity with value-for-money techniques and cost-benefit analysis
  • Able to source information, synthesise inputs and perform impactful analysis

  • Good self-awareness, demonstrating a high-level of professionalism and tact
  • Excellent planning and delivery across concurrent projects
  • Self-starter, comfortable with ambiguity and works with energy
  • Natural collaborator, with strong work ethic and team spirit

Skills:

The candidate should be able to write in a variety of formats and forms (e.g. white papers, publications, presentations, etc.) in a clear and compelling manner.
