Who we are
Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) plans, develops and manages an integrated transport system for the West Midlands that is reliable, affordable and accessible for all. It is the transport arm of the West Midlands Combined Authority.
A standard setter in the industry, our achievements are regularly recognised nationally, most importantly as the winner of ‘City Region Authority of the Year’ in 2016, 2017 and 2019 at the National Transport Awards.
Whether it’s developing and delivering new infrastructure, collaborating on future mobility projects, operating the West Midlands Metro or helping customers to keep moving, we need creative and innovative talent to join our already excellent team and help us make a real difference to residents, businesses and visitors travelling in and around the West Midlands.
About the team
This is an exciting time for the West Midlands - with Coventry’s City of Culture in 2021, the Commonwealth Games here in 2022, and the arrival of HS2 which will help make us a world class business location. All supported by a massive local programme of bus rapid transit, highway improvements, bike hire, new metro lines and new local rail stations. Together we are forging new standards and new solutions for urban living and enabling social and economic growth. We are at the epi-centre of much of the UK’s research and are piloting new mobility services and data driven systems. We have a globally unique and massive programme of innovation and data science. We are seeking new colleagues to join our dynamic, growing and highly agile team in our Policy, Strategy and Innovation Department of Transport for West Midlands. We have six newly established full time and permanent posts:
Who we need
This role seeks a research analyst with experience working in an analytical role who is passionate about the people of the West Midlands! Through this role you will have many opportunities to get involved to inform and evaluate policies, projects and plans for travel in the West Midlands. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical capabilities with statistical forecasting experience and an ability to understand and appreciate how human behaviour and experience influences movement on the transport network. Your attention to detail will be shared with a capability to see the bigger picture, be creative and problem-solve. You will have the ability to communicate clearly to a variety of audiences, including gathering requirements and the creation and presentation of reports that identify key actions to help build upon previous insight. You will demonstrate a high level of numeracy skills and the ability to critically examine and leverage large data sets to produce drill-down reporting and metrics as well as play a key role in defining and launching automated reports. You will be able to prioritise and manage your workload in an agile, fast-paced environment. A degree is not required for this role but experience with analytical software such as Tableau, ArcGIS, FME, Excel or equivalent, over at least two years is essential for this role. Experience with a programming language such as Python, R, SQL or equivalent and a working knowledge of data science techniques would also be preferable.

This is a remote working opportunity until a date is agreed for the WMCA workforce to return to our usual place of work at 16 Summer Lane, Birmingham.
