Overall purpose of role

We are looking for a macro economist whose primary focus will be on Turkey, closely working with the rest of EEMEA economists and strategists. Responsibilities will involve country analysis with high frequency data and in-depth research reports that demonstrate thoughtful market leadership. The economist will contribute to cross-asset global and regional publications and express the bank’s views through publications, client interactions, and conferences.

Key Accountabilities

  • Produce timely reports both ahead of and in response to data. Complement these with thematic, and longer shelf-life product
  • The product suite includes a weekly, more frequent ad-hoc pieces, plus contributions to other regular publications like the Global Economics Weekly and the Global Outlook
  • The applicant will play a central role within the team, in particular working very closely with, and feeding into, our Macro Research function both in EMEA and globally

Stakeholder Management and Leadership

  • This is a senior role, and there are high expectations regarding the ability of the applicant to have (and build) senior relationships across a broad range of stakeholders including: Research colleagues globally, Sales & Trading colleagues, clients and policy-makers
  • In the near term, there are no direct management responsibilities, but the role offers the potential to grow into one with management responsibilities

Decision-making and Problem Solving

  • In order to deliver on the specific accountabilities (listed above), the candidate will input into, and potentially be responsible for, key forecasts regarding the outlook for the Turkish economy and the factors which drive those forecasts
  • The candidate is expected to have a robust framework for how they assess the Turkish Economy and determine these forecasts

Risk and Control Objectiv

e Ensure that all activities and duties are carried out in full compliance with regulatory requirements, Enterprise Wide Risk Management Framework and internal Barclays Policies and Policy Standards

Person Specification

  • We expect the economist to have a strong macroeconomic background with a deep understanding of interactions with financial markets
  • Strong academic background, preferably PhD in Economics and Finance, with strong quantitative background
  • Turkish language skill is required
  • Strong experience in central banking, financial markets, or international organisations.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English. The ability to communicate complex subjects very clearly in a concise way
  • Strong interpersonal skills and good team player with the ability to build a long lasting and strong professional network
  • Strongly focused on clients and achieving targets
  • Highly organised, efficient, and independent with the ability to work under tight deadlines
  • Takes initiative, naturally curious, and intellectually honest
  • Highly ambitious about own learning curve.
  • Well-developed IT skills including office, particularly excel, and econometric software.
