As agricultural economist, you will plan, design, conduct, manage, and report on economic research projects to further Mercy For Animals' mission and establish the organization as a leader in effective animal advocacy.

You will do invaluable work:

  • Conduct detailed research using insights from agricultural, behavioral, and experimental economics and econometric modeling to answer questions concerning animal and plant farming; consumption of animal products and plant-based proteins; the interrelatedness of advocacy outcomes (e.g., corporate animal welfare and food policy commitments and legislative change) and key market and policy elements (e.g., price points, consumption, consumer food preferences, subsidies, the number of animals raised for food, and international trade in animal products); and the relationships between the environment, public health, and animal agriculture
  • Keep up to date on corporate and legislative progress regarding animal welfare and incorporation of plant-based options into corporate and institutional menus and develop research methods based on the latest and best economic theories to identify how these changes impact animal agriculture
  • Conduct cost-benefit analyses of current and prospective tactics in animal advocacy and provide recommendations for action based on these analyses
  • Work with the director of research to identify gaps in knowledge and create a research program to address them
  • Collect data using both observational and experimental methodologies
  • Analyze, evaluate, and interpret research data
  • Document, report, and present research findings to internal and external stakeholders
  • Attend and present research findings at relevant scientific and animal advocacy conferences
  • Build relationships and collaborate with other researchers in animal advocacy

You have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in agricultural economics, behavioral economics, or a related field (master's or doctorate preferred)
  • Three to five years of research experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Research experience using econometric methods
  • Excellent research and analytical skills, with enthusiasm for finding and handling large and complex data sets
  • Experience using statistical software packages for complex quantitative analyses, or comfort with at least one programming language typically used in data science (such as R or Python).
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, as well as a high degree of organization, efficiency, and attention to detail
  • Ability to translate complex results for lay audiences

Is this the right fit? Absolutely, if this sounds like you:

Curious by nature, I want to use my experience in agricultural economics to better understand the current and potential impacts of animal advocacy on animal agriculture. I love a good data set and enjoy learning and going outside my comfort zone. I am a collaborative team player, with a high degree of emotional intelligence. I am self-motivated and driven by a desire to make a positive difference in the world.
