Experienced R&T Associate in Ecological Economics Applied to Sustainability Finance and Circular Economy (m/f)

Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST)

Esch-sur-Alzette, LU

Ref: ERIN-2017-012

The Environmental Sustainability Assessment and Circularity (SUSTAIN) Unit of the Environmental Research and Innovation department (ERIN) of LIST is developing knowledge, transferable (software) technologies and practical methods for the integrative evaluation and management of the sustainability and toxicological risks of human driven systems. Its final purpose is to foster sustainable, technology driven eco-innovation in industry and to support sustainability-oriented policy-making. In particular, the Unit is developing new metrics to assess the sustainability of large scale systems (like cities or regions), in particular when challenged by public policies, and the support provided by ecosystems services to human activities, under the umbrella of Circular Economy.
To this aim, the Unit already has strong skills in different mathematical modelling techniques including optimization, input-output modelling, multi-criteria analysis, agent-based modelling, stock-flow model frameworks, system dynamics and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Position context

We are currently missing expertise in economics and in particular ecological economics applied to the assessment of Sustainable Finance systems, which is taking momentum at international level and in particular in Luxembourg.
In order to sustain the research developments with solid economic background, also in relation to circular economy business models, and to strengthen their impact, we are looking for a senior researcher able to build a research stream on the monetisation of environmental impacts, in particular in relation to the sustainability assessment of “sustainable finance” instruments (), ecosystem services, and circular economy business models.
The incumbent is supposed to apply these developments to business cases on Sustainability in the broader field of Smart Manufacturing and Smart Cities. The expertise we are looking for is therefore strategic and central in the short and medium term for the mission and development of the RDI Unit.

We are looking for a scientist with several years-experience in the field of ecological economics. The successful applicant will mainly be asked to:

  • Participate to the definition of research proposals in the field of ecological economics and sustainability, in particular in relation to Sustainable Finance and Natural Capital Assessment, to secure funding from national and international competitive programs. To that respect, she/he shall demonstrate a proven track record of funded proposals, ideally from European programs like FP6-7 and H2020.
  • Develop a research line in the field of Sustainable Finance to support the methodological research activity of the Unit and manage the associated portfolio of RDI projects regarding both the scientific and administrative aspects.
  • Valorize the research results by transferring them to the private and public sectors, through the development and exploitation of an intellectual property rights portfolio.
  • Contribute to scientific valorization through papers published in top-ranked scientific journals and through presentations at international conferences in order to foster the international visibility of the Unit.

In order to reach these ambitious missions, the following competencies are welcomed:

  • Experience in Sustainable Finance, and possibly on the definition, evaluation and implementation of Circular Economy business models and Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Knowledge on Sustainability Assessment, in particular Life Cycle Assessment.
  • Proven knowledge and experience in the monetization of natural capital.

  • The candidate shall have a solid background in economics and/or finance and also be trained (or demonstrate equivalent experience) in its application to natural science and/or engineering.
  • A PhD in one of these disciplines is mandatory.

  • Proven experience in the required field of research.
  • Knowledge of Luxembourg and the Luxembourgish socio-economic and industrial system is considered an asset.
  • Monetization of natural capital and environmental impacts
  • General economics – knowledge in economic modelling is considered an asset
  • Circular economy business models
  • Environmental Accounting
  • Interdisciplinary thinking, well-developed communication skills (oral and written) and team spirit to successfully integrate into the multicultural, multilingual and multidisciplinary work environment at LIST.
  • Strongly motivated, challenge and result oriented mind-set.

  • Oral and written English is mandatory
  • French and/or German are considered an asset
