The Bank of England is the UK’s central bank. Our mission is to deliver monetary and financial stability for the British people. The Financial Stability, Strategy and Risk (FSSR) Directorate seeks to ensure the financial system serves households and businesses in bad times, as well as good. We want a financial system that doesn’t disrupt the economy, but still delivers for it.
In FSSR, we are responsible for assessing risks to financial stability from across the financial system and defining the Bank’s strategy for responding to them. We inform decision-making by the Bank’s policy committees: the Financial Policy Committee (FPC), Prudential Regulation Committee (PRC), and Monetary Policy Committee (MPC).
About the role
We are recruiting a researcher or an experienced analyst capable of producing research outputs to join either the Financial Market Risks (FMR) team or the Market Behaviour and Activities (MBA) team, depending on experience, skills and preferences. The FMR team is responsible for assessing risks to asset prices and market functioning and develops policies to mitigate those risks. The MBA team has similar responsibilities for risks from and resilience of non-bank financial institutions, which includes hedge funds, insurance companies, pension funds, exchange-traded funds and peer-to-peer lenders. Both teams contribute to CMD’s research agenda.
You will conduct research and develop models to improve our assessment of risks in financial markets and non-bank financial institutions and to measure and enhance their resilience. Drawing on this, as well as existing models, you will support policy makers by providing analysis of topical issues under CMD’s remit.
You will be analytically minded, capable of matching open questions to suitable means of investigation, and you will have the technical skills to take these investigations forward. You will be expected to lead some pieces of work and be capable of acting independently, but also be effective when working in a team. You will be able to describe your work clearly and distil the key messages and policy implications. As a result, you will become a recognised point of contact for senior staff.
A PhD or MSc plus evidence of research outputs (e.g. working papers) is essential.
In CMD, we work fluidly across teams and contribute to cross-divisional projects through FSSR’s ‘Project Pool’ as well as the Bank’s research agenda through the Research Hub. You will have the opportunity to work in both the Project Pool and Research Hub, potentially allowing you to engage in a wide and varied set of issues depending on your preferences, alongside building expertise in your core role.
