The successful candidate will be based within the Economics & Public Policy Department and Centre for Health Economics & Policy Innovation at Imperial College Business School. They will work on the world’s first initiative to integrate the epidemiological and economic modelling of pandemic preparedness. The initiative will use pioneering techniques to provide critical data and analysis to inform public health decisions related to pandemic preparedness and disease outbreaks around the world.
What you would be doing
You will:
- Work closely with the Economics of Pandemic Preparedness (EPPI) team to integrate behavioural insights into mathematical infectious diseases transmission models, for example via micro-economic utility models.
- Model the cost and benefits of behavioural interventions to contain infections and reduce economic and educational losses, and the return-on-investment to pandemic preparedness.
- Analyse the drivers of economic and health behaviours during pandemics.
- Support the design and evaluation of behaviour interventions that drive socially desirable behaviours (e.g. vaccination, compliance to isolation measures).
- Work closely with the EPPI team to project the societal costs of past and potential future pandemics, considering behavioural insights.
- Work closely with the EPPI team to advise on the return-on-investment to pandemic preparedness, and support outbreak response with behavioural insights.
What we are looking for
- Strong conceptual/ theoretical knowledge and skills in micro-economic modelling
- Passion and aptitude to model and develop the theory of individual behaviour during pandemics
- Proven experience in developing theoretical micro-economic models.
- Proven ability, skills and knowledge in advanced mathematical modelling, and one or several programming languages.
- Prior experience or willingness to acquire skills in modelling individual behaviour
- Prior experience in or willingness to acquire skills in mathematical modelling of infectious disease transmission to a level that will enable collaboration with theoretical economists and epidemiological modelers.
- Initiative and independence in research conceptualization and implementation.
- Willingness and ability to work in interdisciplinary teams.
- Willingness to contribute to the overall objectives and remits of EPPI
- Ability to communicate to a variety of audiences, including EPPI’s partners from multilateral agencies
What we can offer you
The successful candidate is expected to advance this exciting field, and work on the intersection between infectious disease modelling and economics to improve the integration of behavioural-economic and epidemiological modelling of emerging infectious diseases. You will be based at Imperial College Business School but collaborate extensively with the School of Public Health at Imperial College London bringing together academics and research staff from different disciplines to work on this innovative project.

This is a Full Time Fixed Term role for 2 years based on-site at the South Kensington Campus.
Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £43,003 - £46,297 per annum.
