About Our Environment, Resilience & Renewables Group (ERR)

For over 30 years, our Environment teams have helped clients navigate complex environmental, economic and resilience challenges across infrastructure, water, energy, coastal, climate adaptation and development sectors. We combine market‑leading technical excellence with a clear understanding of our clients’ ambitions, pressures and investment drivers.

You will join a collaborative team of economists, environmental scientists, engineers and policy specialists working across major programmes, strategy studies and nationally significant projects. Our work includes:

  • Flood and coastal erosion risk management (FCERM)
  • Climate resilience and adaptation
  • Environmental and socio‑economic assessment
  • Business cases and appraisal for public funding
  • Support to major EIA and strategy development programmes

The Role

We are seeking a Senior Economic Consultant to lead and contribute to economic assessments, business cases and wider consultancy projects.

In this role you will:

  • Lead and deliver economic appraisals following HM Treasury Green Book and Environment Agency appraisal guidance.
  • Develop HM Treasury Five Case Model business cases, including Strategic, Economic, Commercial, Financial and Management Cases.
  • Contribute economic inputs to river, estuary, coastal, ports, environmental and climate resilience projects.
  • Support and guide junior members of the Economics & Business Case practice.
  • Manage small to medium consultancy projects, including budgeting, programming, risk management and reporting.
  • Engage directly with clients, regulators and stakeholders to shape robust and deliverable outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams, contributing to EIAs, strategy studies (e.g., SMPs, SFRAs, CFMPs), feasibility studies, socio‑economic assessments and R&D initiatives.
  • Support proposal development and business growth across the team.

This is a varied role that offers autonomy, client engagement, and significant opportunity for professional development.

What you bring

Essential:

  • Degree (BSc, BA or BEng) in Geography, Economics, Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years relevant experience in economic appraisal or business case development.
  • Experience preparing FCERM business cases using the HM Treasury Five Case Model.
  • Strong capability in developing economic appraisals to Green Book standard, including use of MCM and Environment Agency guidance.
  • Experience managing small projects.
  • Strong writing, analysis and spreadsheet skills (Word, Excel, SharePoint, etc.).
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, work independently or collaboratively, and communicate effectively.

Desirable:

  • Chartered status (e.g., CIWEM) or working toward it.
  • Better Business Case accreditation.
  • GIS experience.
  • Experience developing business cases for other sectors (e.g., socio‑economic assessments for EIA, CCRA, financial appraisals).
  • Experience with client and stakeholder engagement.
  • Experience applying digital tools or AI in consultancy.
