St Helena Island, South Atlantic

3 years FTC from April 2026

£40k pa, depending on experience and qualifications, plus International Supplement

Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and remain dependent on UK government aid.

Providing economic policy analysis and advice, this role is flexible, but depending on your skillset, will cover some of the following fields:

  • macroeconomic forecasting;
  • tax policy and tax analysis;
  • economic development;
  • cost benefit analysis of spending decisions;
  • labour market reform;
  • financial services; and
  • microeconomic policy reforms such as economic regulation of specific sectors.

This varied role is an opportunity to utilise a wide range of quantitative and technical economic abilities, while demonstrating strong general policy development skills. The ability to apply sound and proven economic frameworks to the island’s specific circumstances will be critical to your success as you liaise independently across all levels of government, the community and the private sector.

Holding a Bachelor’s degree in economics, social science, or a related field you have sound quantitative and written communication skills, plus verbal and presentation skills that include the ability to explain complex ideas and engage people. The ability to define and use analytics to support decision-making will be key. With sound professional judgement you are confident in using ICT systems and are able to plan, manage and review tasks.

Your strong interpersonal skills include motivating, negotiating, influencing and relationship building and you demonstrate excellent time management, planning and organisation. The ability to be creative, to identify improvements and anticipate and respond to change will be essential, along with proficiency at assessing problems and determining the most appropriate action. You should be approachable and confident in developing team members.

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena.  As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.

Our Benefits Package Includes:

  • An International Supplement, full details of which are in the Overseas Vacancy Information at sthelenapublicservicejobs.sh
  • Relocation Allowances, full details of which are in the Overseas Vacancy Information at sthelenapublicservicejobs.sh
