The Corporate Strategy team at ArcelorMittal is tasked with developing and maintaining a robust view of the steel industry, its core drivers of profitability and their evolution, and leveraging this to support strategic decisions at both the Group and business unit level. 

As the Senior Economist, Corporate Strategy you will work with the team to shape and support both the fundamental analysis of the underlying trends in the industry and leverage our knowledge base to support projects and strategic initiatives across the Group. This includes understanding the current and potential global macroeconomic developments, forming views and translating their implications across core regions and industries. Specifically, you will be engaged in internal and external research and analysis, and engaging with the businesses on key assumptions for business and strategic planning. You will support strategy formulation, working with cross functional teams across business units and other corporate functions departments (especially Group Finance, IR, and M&A).

Key responsibilities

  • Assess, develop views and monitor global macroeconomic developments. This includes both near-term shocks (e.g. trade policy, energy shocks) and medium-term structural megatrends (e.g. AI, geopolitical fragmentation, climate change), as well as evolving global structural risks 
  • Analyse economic developments and translate their implications for core regions (China/US/EU/Brazil/India) and core steel end-use sectors (e.g. construction, heavy manufacturing, automotive) 
  • Synthesise and communicate analysis to senior management. Respond to ad hoc requests from leadership
  • Develop and maintain medium-term global macroeconomic and steel demand models, scenarios and forecasts
  • Help build and strengthen the economics capability within Corporate Strategy, including the management, coaching and development of a junior economist
  • Liaise with and leverage the expertise and information of regional business units, as well as providing support
  • Build and maintain networks with external economists, industry associations, research institutions and multilateral organisations 

Education / Experience required

  • Bachelor's degree in Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Science or another quantitative discipline. Master's degree in Economics or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum 7 years' relevant experience in economics, economic consulting, research institutions, financial institutions or corporate strategy within a multinational company. Experience in metals, mining, industrials or other cyclical sectors is advantageous.
  • Strong quantitative, analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesise complex economic developments into clear business implications and actionable insights.
  • Experience developing economic forecasts, scenarios and models, and communicating findings to senior stakeholders.
  • Experience coaching, developing or managing junior analysts or economists is desirable.

  • Fluent in English. Foreign language competency advantageous. Experience studying/working abroad is a plus
  • Experience with using Economic databases and models, both public (global institution and national statistics) and private (e.g. Oxford Economics, S&P Global, and Haver Analytics)
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills, specifically Excel, Power Point; database management and programming skills advantageous
