The European Investment Fund (EIF) is seeking to recruit for its Impact Assessment Division, at its headquarters in Luxembourg, a Trainee – Economic Researcher.

Duration: 5 months & Starting date: May 2026

Specific Post Environment

The Impact Assessment Division is part of the Strategy Office. The main objective of the division is to be responsible for promoting the EIF’s transition towards an impact-driven institution and supporting the EIF’s business development and strategic orientation. The team’s goal is to develop frameworks, processes and tools to assess the achievement of policy priorities, including the assessment of the ex-ante and ex-post (non-)financial impacts of EIF operations.

Overall objective

Your overall objective will be to:

  • Support in the development of the EIF Impact and Additionality Assessment Framework (IAAF), the creation of the necessary tools and processes to implement the ex-ante IAAF methodology, and the delivery of ex-post impact assessment studies.
  • Support the development of tools and processes that facilitate data-driven decision-making and enhance impact measurement.

Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the senior of the team, you shall:

  • Contribute to the pilot phase implementation of the ex-ante EIF IAAF, including the selection of EIF operations to grade as well as the collection, storage, management and quality assurance of relevant operational data to carry out assessments according to the EIF IAAF methodology;
  • Support in maintaining the documentation, manuals, user guides and training material necessary to successfully deploy the EIF IAAF;
  • Support in the descriptive tasks ancillary to the EIF IAAF, including ex-post assessment of EIFs operation and projects aiming at classifying and estimating the non-financial impact of EIF’s activities.

Expected outcome 

  • Contribute to the development, piloting and full-scale rollout of the ex-ante EIF IAAF;
  • Support the ex-post IAAF micro-data projects, focusing on EIF past operations;
  • Support the team’s obligations vis-à-vis reporting and data visualisation of the EIF IAAF outputs.

Qualifications

  • University degree (or on-going studies) in Economics, Finance, Computer Science or a Business-related field; preferably at least Bachelor level.
  • Knowledge and understanding of EIF's mission, activities and products and of markets and legal frameworks relevant to EIF business, as well as policies and priorities in that context.
  • Advanced analytical and quantitative skills. Knowledge of relational databases like MySQL, SQL server would be considered and asset.
  • Good programming skills. Experience with Business Intelligence tools (e.g., Tableau, PowerBI) would be a plus.
  • Thorough knowledge of standard Microsoft IT applications in use within the team, in particular Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with different public data sources in use within the team (e.g. ECB, OECD, Eurostat) would be a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and good knowledge of other Microsoft application tools (Word, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint).
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English. Good command of another EU language would be an advantage.
