Economic and Financial Consulting (EFC)
Our economists, accountants and finance experts draw on a diverse set of skills to answer a wide range of economic and financial questions, often in the context of legal disputes.
We work on varied and challenging assignments across a wide spectrum of industries. We work with international law firms, global conglomerates and FTSE 100 companies, governments and regulators.
We have significant expertise in the valuation of businesses, intellectual property, financial products, and other assets. We are the leading firm in the provision of expert evidence on valuation issues and the quantification of economic losses before courts and tribunals all around the world. We also provide valuation services for commercial, reporting, and regulatory purposes, for example, in the context of licensing, investment appraisal, fiscal valuation, and transfer pricing.
Data and Economics Team
We are a specialist team within the general EFC practice.
We work on projects with large volumes of data, or where questions of economics, or cause-and-effect are important. We use a wide range of analytical techniques – from economics, statistics, econometrics, finance, and increasingly data science – to address these questions in two broad contexts: advisory projects, and disputes. Our team is deeply integrated into the broader practice. We regularly work alongside our valuations and disputes colleagues.
About The Role
Our team’s advisory work concerns complex and high-profile matters relating to business strategy, government policy and economic regulation. Example projects include:
- Conducting an econometric analysis of the effect of e-cigarette regulations on traditional cigarette smoking rates.
- Modelling the effect of different government tax proposals on a retail business’s finances and government tax revenues.
- Providing pro-bono advice to a charity on how to gather data on the likely impact of its charitable work, to inform its application for funding.
Our team’s disputes work entails supporting parties, courts and arbiters engaged in high-value commercial litigation and international arbitration, including by preparing expert reports and ultimately providing oral testimony. Example projects include:
- Quantifying the effect of serious fraudulent behaviour conducted by a listed company, to inform a claim by shareholders for damages.
- Quantifying the loss suffered by diesel car owners arising from vehicle emissions being allegedly higher than promised.
- Measuring the causal effect of an allegedly defective network component on broadband customer complaints.
- Designing a statistical sample of allegedly fault products to determine the true extent of faults.
Our work is agnostic to industry or sector, but the common thread is that all these questions require thoughtful and expert analysis to answer, using techniques from economics, statistics, econometrics, finance, and increasingly data science.
