The market for sustainability and social value technology solutions that help large organisations improve their transition to a more sustainable future is now experiencing strong growth.  Thrive is an established niche player in this space with an excellent customer base but is now poised for further significant growth due to emerging market opportunities and a product suite which can make a real impact on the future of sustainability reporting.

Job Description

The Economics Team at Thrive is a newly established team that works at the cutting-edge of welfare economics, social value measurement, cost-benefit analysis (CBA) and econometrics. We are seeking an Economist to join our dynamic team.

As an Economist, you will be at the forefront of designing and applying innovative methods to quantify social impact. You’ll work across sectors and countries translating outcomes into rigorous, meaningful economic evidence that informs real policy and investment decisions. You will work will leading globally-renowned experts in this sector.

In this role you will

  • Conduct applied research on the valuation of non-market goods and outcomes such as pollution, education, crime and health (including primary research and survey design). This includes methods such as contingent valuation, travel cost methods, wellbeing valuation and discrete choice experiments;
  • Apply complex methods and approaches in welfare economics to real-world policy and investment decisions, covering for example distributional weighting;
  • Conduct econometric studies using national level datasets;
  • Develop and maintain technical features in the Thrive Software Platform. This includes collaborating with the product team, and other stakeholders to define requirements and scope; everyone has a voice.
  • Conduct bespoke research for clients;
  • Publish new and innovative research;
  • Liaise with key Government and private sector organisations.
  • Learn best-practices in terms of the application of welfare economics and econometrics to policy evaluation; we strive to be always learning and improving.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and emerging economic methodologies, advocating for incorporating them into our tech solutions when appropriate.

What You’ll Bring

  • An excellent understanding of economics and econometrics (min. 2:1 undergraduate degree in economics, but a Masters degree is preferred).
  • Proficiency in Stata, R and other programming platforms.
  • Highly-skilled in Excel.
  • Mission-driven with a desire to use economics to positively impact society.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Comfort in giving and receiving constructive feedback, fostering continuous improvement within the team.
  • Effective organisational and time-management capabilities, adept at prioritising tasks, taking responsibility and meeting deadlines.
  • Collaborative in nature and focused on prioritising team outcomes  
  • A fast learner and able to adapt with evolving needs of the role
  • Able to bring a professional, respectful and approachable manner to the team

Nice to Haves

  • Prior experience of working as an economist in policy areas (government or private sector consulting).
  • Experience of designing surveys and primary data collection.
  • Experience of delivering and analysing Discrete Choice Experiments.
  • Some understanding of writing and optimizing SQL queries to extract, analyse, and manage data across relational databases.
  • Innovative and challenging work at the forefront of economics in this area.
